Director's Note

"Canberra's 100th birthday and the Canberra Theatre Centre's own upcoming 50th birthday in 2015, is a great time to reflect on the cultural contribution and legacy of CTC.

For nearly half of the of the time Canberra has existed, it has had its own dedicated cultural centre, bringing great national and international work to town and fostering our local artistic community. It is worth noting that CTC was the first of its kind; all of the major cultural centres including Sydney Opera House and the Arts Centre, Melbourne followed.

The great worth, not only of the facility but of the people who work within it, was made clear to me during 2012's season of Barry Humphries' Eat, Pray, Laugh. This was a genuine world premiere and a true off-broadway try-out. The ability of our staff, especially back stage, to get the show up and running showed that we can play at an international level.

On another note, the short play festival for high school children, Fast+Fresh; our continued support of local artist output via The Courtyard Studio; our world-leading access service; our commitment to social capital tickets and the delivery of Take Part programs - all show how we value our role in our local community.

The year's season is a bumper crop of 20 shows. I would like to thank Robyn Archer, her team at the centenary and CTC Programming Manager, Gill Hugonnet for making this season possible. It features at least one show from every state and territory and highlights three local works. I am convinced that within this season you will find a package that speaks directly to you in this celebratory year.

With 20 shows it is difficult to single out any one, however, it would be remiss of me not to mention the residencies of both Big hART and Jigsaw Theatre Company at CTC. Big hART's residency will be one of the Centenary's legacies to Canberra. Jigsaw is partnering with us to present seasons of work for children. It is thrilling for CTC to once again be the home for artistic creation, adding to the fabric of Civic Square as a genuine artistic precinct.

So enjoy the season, enjoy the year and take a trip around Australia without ever having to leave the theatre."
