DIRECTOR'S NOTE
This year the staff and management of Canberra Theatre Centre have undertaken
a couple of activities that have, for me, helped to clarify our role within
Canberra's wider community. The crucial 'eureka' moment was when we dawned upon
the notion of simply being 'a place where people come together'. We added 'to
have special experiences', but it was the first part that really stuck - that
sense of community and our place within it.
With Season 2010, we hope to bring you, our Season Ticket Holders, even more
special experiences from the best in Australia including Bell Shakespeare, Sydney
Theatre Company and Sydney Dance Company to great overseas companies such as
Druid Ireland and the Royal New Zealand Ballet.
Our place, your place. Canberra Theatre Centre is the only place in town where
you can have these experiences.
It also pleases me to have the two bonus shows that broaden the range of
experiences available to you: the participatory Shorter+Sweeter and the
deeply moving I Don't Wanna Play House.
Creating a place where people come together also means creating a place where
people from all walks of life come together. It is for that reason we offer our
Social Capital, Access and Music at Midday Programs.
Our Social Capital Program gives us the opportunity to distribute tickets to
local community organisations, while our Music at Midday concerts with
the Royal Military College Band raise money for local charities.
Canberra Theatre Centre's award-winning Access Program demonstrate our commitment
to providing access to theatre for people with special needs through live
captioning, audio descriptions and tactile tours.
So enjoy Season 2010 and the experiences it offers, and we look forward to being
a part of your community throughout the year.
